#MMBBR Books in the Classroom with Yvonne

I Wish I Was A Brownie
By: Marsha Casper Cook

A noble message about being happy with who you are. The main character is a young boy that is represented as a chocolate chip cookie. Cliffy Chippy is an extremely shy boy who wishes he were a brownie. With the help of his teacher, Mrs. Chipster, Cliffy realizes that changing how he looks on the outside doesn’t change who he is on the inside. The illustrations and facial expressions make the characters easy to like.  My second graders can easily read this book and it works well for young readers to practice identifying story elements. 3.5 stars

Whistle Beans Another SugarPaw Adventure
By: VS Grenier

A great book to add to my second-grade classroom library. SugarPaw does not like eating vegetables, but when he lets a friend’s parrot out of its cage he needs to find a way to urge the bird back. It seems as though only “whistle beans” will do the trick. While on the adventure to find Cesar, the parrot, SugarPaw learns how different vegetables help keep his body healthy. Following the story are fun facts about the ten vegetables use throughout the book. It would be fun to have students try the different vegetables as part of an interactive read aloud in any elementary classroom.

Babysitting SugarPaw
By: VS Grenier

I fun book to add to a primary classroom library. SugarPaw does not want a babysitter so he changes the rules chart and spends most of the night misbehaving.  By the end of the evening SugarPaw realizes that he really does like Bonnie Whiskers as a babysitter and has not been honest. The surprising twist at the end will pull on your heartstrings. 3.5 stars
